As you may or may not know there are many individuals in the medical, dental, vision and other medical associated fields that swear by the usage of scrubs. Scrubs very closely resemble sweats in format but they are made out of a different fabric so they are lighter in weight which makes them much easier to work in. The scrub uniform consists of a top and bottom but there are so many variations that you can stand two people wearing scrubs next to each other and they can look very differently. The scrub is the single most popular garment to wear if you are in these professions.

The scrub originated with surgeons. It was the outfit that they changed into just before they were to go into the scrub room to wash their hands. This is where the term originally came from. For many years surgeons were the primary group of medical professionals that wore the scrub uniform. This spread to the assistants in the surgery room including the nurses and technicians. Eventually anyone that had any reason to go into a surgical room during a surgery would put on scrubs first. This started the expansion of the uniform from the surgical ward to other wards.

Surgeons soon started to do their post-op rounds with a clean pair of scrubs on. Usually they did this because they were going to be back in surgery soon and they needed to be prepared. Sometimes it was just because they liked them more and they were more comfortable than lab coats. Soon medical personnel that supported the surgeries also started to wear scrubs such as the lab technicians and others. Eventually hospitals started to ease their dress code requirements and the scrub uniform became optional for many of the medical personnel at the facility.

As soon as hospitals started to allow the scrub uniform some of the doctors who had private practices began to allow their office staff to wear them as well and the scrub uniform began to appear in private practices. From there the use of the scrub mushroomed into just about every facet of the medical field and is now an accepted part of the dress code within almost all medical facilities. Although the traditional uniform is still worn or mandated by some, it is by far the minority amongst many of the job types you will run into at a medical facility.

The reason scrubs have taken off in popularity is because of their comfort and their functionality. You can do your job and feel good while you do it. For many people this is a win-win and not something they would easily give up. The ability to wear something that fits nice and loose, has lots of pockets for lots of things and can keep you cool or warm depending on the scrub uniform you are wearing is very beneficial to many. The scrub has been around for a very long time and with its new found fashion statement they are probably not going anywhere for a long long time to come.

This might seem surprising, given the amount of training and attention given to technical skills and business knowledge, but the fact remains that there is more to career success than just knowing the facts.

Hard skills vs. soft skills

A typical business degree program or executive training program will focus on what are considered hard skills. Examples might include strategic business planning, financial analysis, budgeting, or product development. These are all important things to know, but an increasing number of companies are also interested in the so-called soft skills.

These soft skills are best defined as how a manager interacts with people. An evaluation of soft skills might include answer the following questions:

What behaviors does the manager consistently demonstrate?

How is the manager viewed by others at levels at, above, and below his or her organizational level?

How does the manager communicate with others?

How does the manager handle team-building situations?

Does the manager get along with other people?

Getting personal

Many business professionals have difficulty with soft skills because they are so personal in nature, but it is exactly these soft skills that are keys to success as a manager and leader. Even more difficult is accepting the reality of poor soft skills and making an effort to improve.

It is not enough anymore to know how to analyze a profit and loss statement. A good manager or leader will take that profit and loss statement and use it to coach employees, facilitate team productivity, and lead toward performance improvement. This cannot be done simply by reading the numbers and telling people that numbers need to change. It is done by interacting with people in a way that encourages them, motivates them, and reinforces their value to the team.

Improving interpersonal skills

The good news is that everyone can learn new interpersonal skills and improve upon their old ones. Most managers will say that they already have good interpersonal skills, so it comes as a shock when they receive open, honest feedback that says they need to make improvements. Only through such feedback, though, can areas for improvement be identified and specific goals set for practicing new behaviors.

For example, if you are perceived as a poor listener then you can practice new behaviors to change that perception. You might set a goal to focus more on listening to another person in one-on-one situations, or to limit your contributions in a group discussion so that others can contribute more.

Another strategy is to enlist the help of a learning partner. This person observes you and provides you with regular feedback on whatever behavior you are trying to improve. He or she is your cheerleader when you do well and your coach when you can do better.

Putting it all together

The bottom line is that when it comes to being a good manager or leader, you must master the hard skills of your specific job as well as the soft skills of interpersonal relations. Interpersonal skills must be a focus of your leadership development. Some people are naturally better at personal interactions, but anyone can learn to do better. The key is to recognize the importance of interpersonal relations, honestly evaluate your skill level, and consciously improve those behaviors that need work.

Harvard Law School gives its highest honour to Pakistani judge

Pakistan’s embattled Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry was conferred with Harvard Law School’s “Medal of Freedom” for his struggle for the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary on Wednesday in Boston, Massachusetts.

In the past, this award has been given to the team which litigated Brown v. Board of Education, and to Nelson Mandela.

The New York City Bar Association granted him an honorary membership at a ceremony attended by Chaudhry on Monday, recognising him as a “symbol of the movement for judicial and lawyer independence in Pakistan.”

In 2007, Chaudhry received the “Lawyer of the Year” award from New York-based periodical The National Law Journal.

On November 3, 2007, then-president Pervez Musharraf imposed a state of emergency and suspended the constitution. Soldiers of the Pakistan Army entered the Supreme Court of Pakistan and arrested Chaudhry along with seven other judges.

Musharraf replaced Justice Chaudhry with Abdul Hameed Dogar as the Chief Justice of Pakistan under Musharaf’s Provisional Constitutional Order issued that day. Chaudhry then spent several months under house arrest.

Harvard Law School established its “Medal of Freedom” as its highest honour, to recognise individual efforts “to uphold the legal system’s fundamental commitment to freedom, justice, and equality.”
