Andrea Muizelaar on fashion, anorexia, and life after ‘Top Model’

Monday, November 26, 2007

In the 18 months since Andrea Muizelaar was crowned winner of the reality TV series Canada’s Next Top Model, her life has been a complete whirlwind. From working in a dollar store in her hometown of Whitby, Ontario, to modeling haute couture in Toronto, she had reached her dream of becoming a true Top Model.

But at what cost? Unknown to casual television viewers, Muizelaar had been enveloped in the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, which inevitably became too much for her to bear. She gave up modeling and moved back to Whitby, where she sought treatment for her disorder, re-entered college, and now works at a bank. Where is she now? Happy and healthy, she says.

Recently Andrea Muizelaar sat down with Wikinews reporter Mike Halterman in a candid interview that stretched to nearly two hours, as she told all about her hopes and aspirations, her battle with anorexia, and just what really happened on Canada’s Next Top Model.

Flexible displays soon to be in production

Thursday, March 17, 2005

Roll up displays for use in hand-held gadgets will be available for mass production by March 2007 according to co-developer Philips. Working with US based paper pioneer E-ink, Philips have developed a 13cm wide screen which is just 0.1 millimetres thick and can be rolled up so that it is only 15 millimetres in diameter.

The screen, which Philips hope to license to makers of in-car satellite navigation systems, mobile web browsers and smart phones, uses no back light and displays a monochrome image in four shades of grey as well as black and white. According to Philips the screen is able to give a “paper-like contrast”.

The screen consists of a backing layer of plastic film which contains a matrix of transistors. This is topped off with layer transparent “electronic ink” capsules and a layer of clear plastic. The capsules are approximately 50 micrometres in diameter and contain polarised black and white particles. Using the transistors, a pattern of positive and negative charge can be applied which manipulates the particles to form monochrome images.

Reusable Glass Water Bottles

bytimothyharvard

With modern advancements in research and technology, there has been an increase in awareness of the health risks found in some plastics, as well as to the lasting impact the use of plastic bottles has on the environment. This is why people all over the nation are switching to drinking from reusable glass water bottles. Glass has been a trusted material for centuries and is 100% recyclable. It is far safer to use than the typical plastic bottles. The bottles bought in large packages at the store are only good for that one use, as the chemicals in the plastic leak into your beverage over a short period of time. Even the reusable water bottles are not without their dangers. This includes drinking bottles, water storage, and baby bottles. Glass is completely neutral, your beverage will not take on any extra taste from the bottle itself. Not only is this a benefit to you, but also to any children that will be using the bottles. It will also get them to drink more water, which would bolster their immune system and overall level of health.

One of the top manufactures of reusable glass water bottles is RainaWater. They grew out of the need to find the perfect water bottle which was both environmentally friendly and stylish. Each new type of plastic container being tried was still missing the mark when it came to being the perfect water bottle to use. Many of the bottles in current circulation also presented health hazards. Various metal varieties were decidedly unnatural, and lead to an unpleasant taste permeating throughout the beverage within. Glass was the solution they were looking for.

Not only is glass the perfect vessel for liquids, but the bottles looked great with different graphics. When going through RainaWater, you will receive custom reusable glass water bottles that are individually crafted using glass manufactured in Canada. The bottles can be etched with an image of your choosing, and personalized with pretty much any word or short phrase you would like. For further ease of use and convenience, these reusable glass water bottles are dishwasher safe and can hold 32 ounces.

With reusable glass water bottles, you are preserving the health of you and your family. Without the added chemicals that come from many drinking containers available in stores today, you and your family will be able to live a richer, fuller life.

New York couple keeps Indonesian women as slaves

Wednesday, May 16, 2007

In Long Island, New York, a millionaire couple has been arrested after keeping two Indonesian women as slaves for at least five years.

According to federal prosecutors, the two women were beaten and tortured by Nassau County couple Varsha Mahender Sabhnani, 35, and her husband Mahender Murlidhar Sabhnani, 51, and were kept from leaving the house unless it was to take out the trash. Both women are legal immigrants who migrated to the United States back in 2002. Since receiving the jobs, both women had their passports taken away from them by the Sabhnanis.

“No one would ever think that human beings were being brought into the United States and held for slave labor, and beaten, and tortured in a beautiful mansion right here in one of the most exclusive neighbourhoods on Long Island,” said Demetri Jones, a prosecutor in the case.

Authorities say that the women had scalding hot water poured on them, were forced to take as many as 30 showers in a three hour period, were made to run up and down flights of stairs, and one of the women was forced to eat “25 extremely hot chilli peppers.” All the “punishments” were in response to not completing work properly. The women also said that they had to hide food from “their captors” because the Sabhnani’s did not feed them enough.

Police were alerted to the situation when they found one of the women walking around the city wearing only a towel and a pair of pants.

Both women were promised by the couple to receive at least USD$100 to USD$200 for their work, but according to prosecutors, the couple paid only USD$100 a month, which was sent to one of the women’s daughters who lives in Indonesia.

The women are only identified as Samirah and Nona.

The couple will face charges of keeping people against their will. They are reported to be running a perfume business from their Long Island home.

Virginia law bans mobile phone use by teen drivers

Tuesday, April 3, 2007

Virginia governor Tim Kaine signed a bill into law on Friday last week that prohibits the use of mobile phones by newly licensed drivers under the age of 18 while operating a motor vehicle. Mobile phone users must pull off to the side of the road, or into a parking lot, to use a phone. The law takes effect July 1.

The newly signed bill by Virginia’s governor makes it the 14th state in the U.S. to enact a partial ban on mobile phone use. The age group affected, 16 and 17-year-olds, need consent from their parents or guardians to obtain a driver’s license in the state.

“I believe this is a common-sense restriction on those new drivers who may be tempted to pay more attention to phone calls and text messages than the road, endangering themselves and other drivers,” said Governor Kaine.

State legislative proposals to restrict mobile phone use while driving have failed in 17 U.S. states where similar bills were introduced. There are currently four U.S. states, California, Connecticut, New Jersey and New York, that have passed laws limiting mobile phone use as an on-road hazard while driving. For example, both New York and New Jersey classify use of a handheld mobile phone without an earpiece as a moving violation.

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law mobile phone use limitations that will take effect on July 2008. It imposes of fine of $20 for, “… anyone caught driving and using a cell phone unless the driver uses a headset, ear bud or other technology that frees both hands.” according to Matt Hamblen of ComputerWorld.com.

45 countries currently ban use of the hand held devices while driving. Botswana and New Zealand are debating similar measures.

The Amazing Appeal Of Outdoor Kitchens

byadmin

Homeowners sometimes find themselves with extra square footage. This is usually amidst a patio or backyard setting. The overall appeal of these locales is fascinating. You’re going to find that they can be retrofitted with a lot of different options. As you look at the different options that you have for outdoor space, don’t dismiss the notion of having a kitchen outside. Outdoor kitchens are interesting in that they provide the best of a lot of different elements outside. If you aren’t quite sure, consider some of the alluring aspects of this option that you’ll want to consider.

Entertaining With Culinary Elements

First and foremost, consider the culinary options that you will have in place. When you have a full outdoor kitchen, you could do a lot more than just grill some steaks. Imagine getting a lot more done. For instance, what if you wanted to do a mixed menu? Some things grilled, some things baked, and others boiled? You can do it all if you have the right equipment in place, and that’s where this comes shining through. This brings together entertaining options that you wouldn’t be able to do otherwise.

The Visual Design

There’s nothing quite as amazing as having a nice open concept kitchen. Now, multiply that by 10 and you will see that outdoor kitchens can absolutely give you a thrill. This concept goes beyond the ability to just cook and entertain. There’s a visual element to this that is absolutely stunning. You’re going to find that it will come into play when you want to sell your home. Selling your home with this in place will draw the eye, and give you a little more wiggle room in terms of asking price.

The Concepts

For those that aren’t sure what outdoor kitchens consist of, you’ll definitely want to look at the possibilities. If you have a lot of space, you could have a full scale culinary range. From installing ovens, burners, grills, and sinks to putting in islands, you have a lot of diverse opportunities to explore. This includes the additional elements of tile, stone, and more that can accent your existing patio or decking.

At the end of the day, kitchen renovations don’t have to be isolated to just the interior of your home. You could use existing, outdoor spaces to create outstanding concepts. Kitchens can bring about so much, especially if you want to entertain. If you want to have friends over, or just have a family get together, you can easily do so when you have outdoor area to cook, entertain and more. Installation is a matter of working with a good crew and contractor. Once all the pieces are put into place, you’ll wonder how you managed without it all.

Influential rock drummer Ginger Baker dies at age 80

Monday, October 7, 2019

Yesterday morning, English drummer Ginger Baker died in a hospital at the age of 80. The news came from the Twitter account in his name and was independently confirmed by Associated Press with his daughter Nettie Baker. On September 25, it was reported Baker was hospitalized in critical condition. Baker was widely known as the drummer and co-founder of the rock band Cream, an early supergroup.

Baker, a life-long smoker and former heroin addict, suffered from health problems for years. The list of ailments included hearing loss, osteoarthritis, emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as heart problems for which he had surgery in 2016. Although known to have lived his latter years in South Africa, his daughter said he died in Britain without elaborating.

Ginger Baker was born Peter Edward Baker in Lewisham, London, in 1939. His father was killed in combat in 1943 during World War II. Baker — who was reportedly nicknamed Ginger due to his red hair — began playing drums in his teens. In a story he sometimes told, he had a habit of tapping on school desks. When an opportunity arose at a party, his classmates encouraged him to sit down at a drum set. “I’d never sat behind a kit before, but I sat down — and I could play! One of the musicians turned round and said, ‘Bloody hell, we’ve got a drummer’, and I thought, ‘Bloody hell, I’m a drummer’?”, he recalled in a 2009 retelling of the story to the The Independent.

Baker began his career as a drummer in jazz bands. He played with Acker Bilk and Terry Lightfoot. In 1962, when fellow drummer Charlie Watts was leaving Blues Incorporated for The Rolling Stones, Watts recommended Baker to be his replacement. Later, Baker found early success with rhythm and blues band The Graham Bond Organisation where he met bassist Jack Bruce.

In 1966, Baker, Bruce and singer/guitarist Eric Clapton, who was known from The Yardbirds, formed Cream. The rock trio was a massive success, selling tens of millions of records, including the first ever platinum certified album Wheels of Fire. Cream recorded four albums, then in 1968 disbanded with Baker and Bruce having developed a volatile relationship. Clapton and Baker were subsequently in another supergroup Blind Faith with Steve Winwood and Ric Grech. Blind Faith recorded only one studio album but notably played before a crowd of a hundred thousand at a free concert in London’s Hyde Park.

In the 1970s, Baker moved to Nigeria where he established a studio and began playing polo. Here he collaborated with Fela Kuti and worked on Wings’s album Band on the Run with Paul McCartney of The Beatles fame. Later, he recorded with John Lydon’s Public Image Ltd.

Cream was inducted in 1993 into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band reunited in 2005 for several London and New York concerts. Afterwards he moved to South Africa, and still lived there when the 2012 documentary Beware of Mr. Baker was filmed. Baker’s last recording was 2014’s Why? solo album. Baker retired from live performances in 2016 due to his ill health.

Paul McCartney wrote on Twitter, “Ginger Baker, great drummer, wild and lovely guy. We worked together on the ‘Band on the Run’ album in his ARC Studio, Lagos, Nigeria. Sad to hear that he died but the memories never will.”

“A very sad loss, and my condolences to his family and friends. A loss also for his contribution to music. He was well-grounded in jazz from very early on,” wrote Steve Winwood in a statement. “Beneath his somewhat abrasive exterior, there was a very sensitive human being with a heart of gold. He’ll be missed.”

Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones also reacted on Twitter, “Sad news hearing that Ginger Baker has died, I remember playing with him very early on in Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated. He was a fiery but extremely talented and innovative drummer.”

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.
