US novelist Tom Clancy dies at age 66

Wednesday, October 2, 2013

The bestselling US novelist Tom Clancy died yesterday in a hospital in Baltimore, according to his publisher. The sixty-six year old is best known for a series of novels themed around espionage, military affairs and geopolitical intrigue, many of which have been adapted into movies and video games.

The Hunt for Red October, Clancy’s first novel, sold over five million copies and was made into a movie with Alec Baldwin and Sean Connery. President Ronald Reagan described the novel as a “perfect yarn”. The protagonist of Red October, CIA analyst Jack Ryan, starred in a series of Clancy adventures featuring wars, terrorist attacks and international political power games. Ryan has been played by Harrison Ford and later Ben Affleck.

Seventeen of his twenty novels have reached number one on the New York Times bestseller list. In 2002, Forbes magazine estimated Clancy’s earnings at US$47.8m. His final novel, Command Authority, is to be published in December.

There are actually hundreds of improvements and new features in the latest version of .Net development framework and some of them are mentioned below. Outsource .Net development has always been a point of interest for those who work in this domain so you need to know the best features brought to you by .Net Framework 4.0.

First of all, in the performance and diagnostics domain, offshore .net development team will be able to monitor the memory usage and processor usage per application domain. This feature was not possible in any of the previous versions of the .Net development Framework. Of course, this will help in managing resources in a proper manner which will surely improve the overall work efficiency.

Garbage collection is also a great new feature and a great .Net development as well because it helps at replacing the concurrent garbage. This particular feature helps offshore .Net development team to develop application without the requirement of releasing free memory.

Among all the recent features added to the latest .Net version, the existence of DLR is among the greatest developments in this domain. .Net development team is able to develop dynamic languages and add them to the static languages already existent in the system. There are new types of expression trees that can support the recent added DLR feature.

The offshore .Net development includes contra variance and covariance as well as Big Integer. The great thing about Big Integer is that it can be used by all the previous versions of .Net development Framework as well as the latest one.

The latest outsource .Net development version also includes new features such as Tuples or improvements such as the file enumeration system which is highly improved. Of course, this will lead to greater performances of the .Net development framework applications in the long run.

Memory map files or being able to search for 64 bit processes are also great developments made by offshore .Net development team. Outsourced .Net development team will also be able to choose between 32 bit and 64 bit processes when there is a need for a specific process in the task manager.

The innovative features of .Net development framework also include the possibility of copying a string into another one using the great Copy To function. You can combine file paths by using the Combine Path function.

With the new registry options, offshore .Net development team will be able to specify a volatile registry which will not bother developers anymore once the computer is restarted. Besides, the registry keys are not restricted in length as they used to be at the previous versions of the .Net Framework. They needed to be less than 255 characters while now they can go way over that number.

Besides the .Net development based on improved functions or features, there are purely new features that appeared at the suggestion of those who use this program on a regular basis. These are only a few examples for core features of the latest version of .Net development framework 4.0.

US soccer: Sounders 2 maintain win streak with 2-1 victory over Timbers 2

Sunday, April 12, 2015

Seattle Sounders FC 2 (S2) association football club have maintained a streak with their third home win at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Washington last night, this time against Portland Timbers 2 (T2).

T2 struck first when defender Harrison Delbridge headed the ball in from a free kick in the 30th minute. Seattle responded with Pablo Rossi converting a penalty kick in the 47th minute and Giuliano Frano tapping a lobbed pass into the net in the 88th minute. Final score, 2–1 Seattle.

In the 30th minute, T2 midfielder Blair Gavin placed the ball nicely for Delbridge who connected cleanly with the ball to head it past S2 goalkeeper Charlie Lyon. At half, the game still stood with Portland in the lead 1–0. In the first minutes of the second half, S2 Andy Craven was pulled down in the penalty box by T2 Andy Thoma. Rossi was able to convert the penalty with a strong strike to the top left corner. T2 keeper Jake Gleeson was unable to stop the shot. Frano’s goal came in the 88th minute as he was able to chip the ball into the net after nice build up play by the Sounders. The Timbers did look dangerous on corners having earned 8 to Seattle’s 3.

The Timbers suffered their first loss of their season while the Sounders experienced their first ever comeback victory. This was also the first match between the two Cascadia rivals. T2 now stand at 7 points with a record of 2–1–1. S2 and Arizona United SC are now the only Western Conference teams still undefeated. Portland next faces defending champions Sacramento Republic FC away on Saturday, April 18 while Seattle hits the road to battle Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Thursday, April 16.

Highlights of 2008 Taipei County Jin Shi Marathon

Thursday, March 6, 2008

The 2008 Taipei County Jin Shi International Marathon which was established in 1979 and suspended from 1986 to 2001 before being transformed from “Jin Shan” to “Jin Shi” with its racing scale expanded, crossed through three townships including Wanli, Jinshan, and Shihmen was held last Sunday (March 2 in Taipei Time). Not only professional runners from Asian and European countries participated in this race, but several enterprises, governmental and academic teams also supported this race by participating in 6K Fun Run classes.

Even though the Central Weather Bureau warned of an impending dust storm, good weather graced this race with rain-free conditions. Another challenge for the runners in the 21K and 42K classes was cold winds due to the race route partially including coast line.

Finally, Belgian marathon runner Rik Ceulemans, men’s record holder of this race, extended his record with 2H18m13s to win the men’s championship, and Yu-fang Hsu, women’s champion of 2007 ING Taipei Marathon, won her title at women’s class with 2H53m39s. Coincidently, Wen-chien Wu and Wan-ling Wu, former champions of this race, all won the second place in their own gender class.

As a recap for the race, not only runners gave their best performances in this race, but several foreign teams — especially from Okinawa, Japan — played a great role adding a cultural exchange aspect to the event. Bros Sports, the race organizer, supervised by Taipei County Government in this race, some senior managers from Bros Sports hoped organizations from the sports industry could arrange the best integration of several marathon races in Taiwan in the future even though Bros Sports promoted a special attempt this year with three marathon races including Jin Shi, Dajia Mazu, and UMC Hsinchu stages.

There Are Good Reasons To Pressure Wash The Exterior Of Your House

byadmin

The exterior surfaces of a house are constantly under attack by harsh natural and man-made elements which, if not removed, will eventually be the cause of surface degradation. As the surface discolors, corrodes and chalks, it loses curb appeal and potentially the value will drop.

A house is subjected to the harmful effects of the sun, rain, wind and man-made pollutants. Nature doesn’t help either; insects, bird droppings, mold and mildew, everything adds up to a slow, steady decay of your most valuable asset.

There are ways to fight the elements, one of which is pressure washing in Clarksville TN; there are numerous benefits that make having it done a good investment.

 • Upholds the value of your property:

There is no better way to maintain, and in many cases, increase the value of your property. It is more than just appearance, the exterior surface material will last longer when it has been freed of contaminates.

 • Your home looks better:

If you are planning to sell your home, pressure washing the exterior is a great way to increase its curb appeal. When the exterior surface is as clean as the inside of the home it will increase interest in the property and certainly make a good impression on potential buyers.

 • Prevents premature aging:

A house has to be kept in good shape; any homeowner will tell you that maintaining their property in tip-top shape is a full time job. When it comes to surface of the house you have two choices; elbow grease or pressure washing in Clarksville TN.

When you keep the outside looking good it will make you feel better, prouder of the house that you call home. It is not just the house; power washing is an excellent way to maintain the patio, walks and driveway.

Actor Robert Blake acquitted

Thursday, March 17, 2005

Visibly relieved and sobbing as the verdict was read, Robert Blake was acquitted on all counts and walked out of the courtroom yesterday a free man.

Charged with murdering his wife, the jury acquitted Blake due to lack of evidence. He was also charged with two counts of soliciting to have his wife Bonnie Lee Bakley killed. The jury acquitted him on one count, and the judge dismissed the second after the jury became deadlocked in an 11-1 vote.

He was greeted by a crowd of cheering supporters outside the courthouse. The star of the television series Baretta crushed out one of his trademark cigarettes and spoke to the gathering, thanking his lawyers and private investigators who he described as, “This small band of dedicated warriors that saved my life.”

In a speech that lasted 30 minutes, he talked of having to spend $10 million for his defense and said that he was now a poor man who needed a job. The 71 year-old actor also said he was ready to “cowboy it…Get in a motor home or van, feel the wind in my hair and find a little bar in Arizona or someplace.”

The prosecution, which did not seek the death penalty, painted Blake as caught in a loveless marriage with Bakley. Tricked into marrying her by his love of their daughter Rosie, now 4, they claimed that he had felt trapped by a woman who had a history of being a low-life grifter. They alleged that Blake, frustrated after trying to find someone to kill his wife for him, killed her himself. They also claimed that he was the trigger man who, after dining with his wife in their favorite restaurant, put two bullets in her head as the two of them sat in their car outside.

The jury foreman in the trial, Thomas Nicholson, described the prosecution case against Blake as “flimsy.” He said “they could never connect all the links in the chain. We couldn’t put the gun in his hand.” Blake’s defense team was also able to successfully discredit witnesses who testified on the solicitation charges.

Sam Brownback on running for President, gay rights, the Middle East and religion

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Monday, October 15, 2007

Sam Brownback is perplexed. The U.S. Senator from Kansas and Presidential candidate is a Republican whose politics—he is against marriage for gay people, he is against abortion, and he has a clean image in a party tainted by scandal—should speak favorably to the party’s base. But it has not. “I’m baffled by that myself,” Senator Brownback told Wikinews reporter David Shankbone. “We haven’t been able to raise money.”

A recent poll in Iowa has put him in eighth place, with 2% supporting his campaign. “If we don’t finish fourth or better in Iowa…we’ll pull out.”

Senator Brownback’s relationship with God infuses almost every answer you find below. Although he doesn’t feel “competent” to explain why God would dislike gays, he does feel strongly that allowing two men or two women to enter into the union of marriage will destroy it for heterosexuals. Pointing to the research of Stanley Kurtz at the Hoover Institution, Brownback asserts that Northern Europeans have “taken the sacredness out of the institution.”

In the interview, Senator Brownback discusses the tug-and-pull that befalls him when his constituents show up at his office and say, “Look, I’m a conservative, but we need this bridge, we need this subsidy, we need this hospital.” Brownback feels this spending system needs to be changed; however, when it comes to energy policy, Brownback is there for his constituents. David Shankbone asked the Kansas Senator, a supporter of cellulosic ethanol, why he doesn’t support the lowering of tariffs on sugar since sugar ethanol delivers 8 times the energy output of cellulosic ethanol. Brazil, in particular, has become energy independent because of its sugar ethanol program. It’s cheaper to produce, and there is vastly more bang for the buck in sugar fuel than in corn fuel; an entire country no longer needs to import oil because of it. Federal tariffs currently make sugar ethanol too expensive in the United States. “You’re going to kill the ethanol industry here just as it gets going,” was Senator Brownback’s response. However, there is a debate over whether the process to make corn ethanol uses more energy than the ethanol itself produces.

Below is David Shankbone’s interview with Senator Sam Brownback.
