WHO’s reaction to H1N1 influenced by drug companies, reports claim

Sunday, June 6, 2010

Reports suggest the World Health Organisation’s declaring a swine flu pandemic was an error driven by drug companies, and lead to unjustified fear. A year after the swine flu pandemic was declared, stocks are left unused and governments try to abandon contracts, pharmaceutical companies have profited at least £4.6billion from the sale of vaccines alone.

Reports by the British Medical Journal (BMJ), the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (BIJ) and the Council of Europe claim that The World Health Organisation reaction to H1N1 was influenced by pharmaceutical companies and that key scientists behind advice had financial ties with firms Roche and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). These conflicts of interest have never been publicly disclosed by WHO, an apparent violation of its own rules.

The World Health Organisation issued H1N1 guidelines in 2004, recommending countries to stockpile millions of doses of antiviral medication. The advice prompted many countries around the world into buying up large stocks of Tamiflu, made by Roche, and Relenza manufactured by GSK.

A joint investigation with the BMJ and the BIJ, found that scientists involved in developing the WHO 2004 guidance had previously been paid by Roche or GSK for lecturing and consultancy work as well as being involved in research for the companies. “The WHO’s credibility has been badly damaged,” BMJ editor Fiona Godlee said in an editorial.

A report by the health committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, a 47-member human rights watchdog, found that the WHO’s reaction was influenced by drug companies that make H1N1 antiviral drugs and vaccines. It criticised WHO lack of transparency around the handling of the swine flu pandemic and says the public health guidelines by WHO, EU agencies and national governments led to a “waste of large sums of public money and unjustified scares and fears about the health risks faced by the European public.”

We’re still in the pandemic

A spokesman for WHO said the drug industry did not influence its decisions on swine flu. Margaret Chan, the organisation’s director, had dismissed inquiries into its handling of the A/H1N1 pandemic as “conspiracy theories” earlier this year, she had said: “WHO anticipated close scrutiny of its decisions, but we did not anticipate that we would be accused, by some European politicians, of having declared a fake pandemic on the advice of experts with ties to the pharmaceutical industry and something personal to gain from increased industry profits.”

Yesterday, a 16-member “emergency committee” consisting of advisors from the World Health Organisation said that the H1N1 pandemic is not yet over. The WHO has refused to identify committee members, arguing that they must be shielded from industry pressure, so possible conflicts of interest with drug companies are unknown. The BMJ report also reveals that at least one expert on the “emergency committee” received payment during 2009 from GSK.

In related news, Reuters reported, Pfizer Inc, the world’s biggest drugmaker, is selling its swine vaccine business to Chinese Harbin Pharmaceutical Group for $50 million.

United Nations suspends operations in Gaza after schools and trucks are hit by Israeli forces

Friday, January 9, 2009

The United Nations (UN) suspended all of its operations in Gaza from yesterday, after the bombing of a convoy of UN aid trucks which killed one Palestinian driver, and wounded three others. Thursday was the second day of attacks on UN targets after three UN schools housing refugees were bombed on Tuesday, killing over 50 civilians.

“UNRWA decided to suspend all its operations in the Gaza Strip because of the increasing hostile actions against its premises and personnel,” Adnan Abu Hasna, a Gaza-based spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), said yesterday. Richard Miron, spokesman for the UN said that the Israeli military had been notified in advance of the coordinates of the relief trucks saying, “This underlines the fundamental insecurity inside Gaza at a time when we are trying to address the dire humanitarian needs of the population there.”

The bombing of the UN trucks was the last straw for the UN, already angered after Israeli tanks fired on a UN school housing refugees killing 50 including an entire family of seven young children. The UN said that they had given Israel the GPS coordinates of their schools, and demanded accountability for the attacks. Israel’s government says it is investigating the incidents.

More schools were attacked including the al-Fakhora School killing 40 people, many of them women and children. Hours before the attack on the al-Fakhora School was an attack on Asma Elementary School which killed three Palestinian cousins. The cousin’s father said the bodies were so mangled he couldn’t tell the bodies apart, “We came to the school when the Israelis warned us to leave,” he said. “We hoped it would be safe. We were 20 in one room. We had no electricity, no blankets, no food. “Suddenly we heard a bomb that shook the school. Windows smashed. Children started to scream. A relative came and told me one of my sons was killed. I found my son’s body with his two cousins. They were cut into pieces by the shell.” Like al-Fakhora, Asma Elementary is an UNRWA school.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on yesterday that they were trying for four days to get their ambulances to a Gaza neighborhood before being allowed to by Israeli military forces. After getting there, they said, they found four starving children sitting next to the bodies of their dead mothers.

“This is a shocking incident,” said Pierre Wettach, ICRC chief for Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories. “The Israeli military must have been aware of the situation but did not assist the wounded. Neither did they make it possible for us or the Palestinian Red Crescent to assist the wounded.”

Israel granted a three-hour ceasefire yesterday that they gave for aid workers to enter areas that they had closed off. 50 bodies were recovered during the ceasefire, raising the death toll to 763, including more than 200 children, since air raids first began on December 27. 3,121 people have also been wounded. Eight Israeli soldiers and three civilians have died in the same period. Israeli forces also shot a Palestinian man in the West Bank during a protest against Israel’s actions in Gaza. Yesterday, a Palestinian man was killed by Israeli forces after a confrontation in the West Bank Jewish settlement of Ma’ale Adumim near Jerusalem.

Finding The Right Face Lift Surgeon

Finding The Right Face Lift Surgeon

by

John Pawlett

Face lifts are becoming commonplace these days. It s important to remember, however, that a face lift is still surgery. You should choose a face lift surgeon as carefully as you choose any other doctor involved in your health care. A good place to begin is word of mouth. Talk to people who have had face lifts about their doctors. Develop a “short list”–two or three doctors you might be interested in working with and then schedule a consultation visit with each of them.

Since any doctor can claim to be a plastic surgeon, the first things you want to look for are professional affiliations. The plastic surgeon doing your face lift should be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and ideally by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery, as well.

Ask the doctor how many face lifts he or she has done in the last year. Were there any complications? You should also ask to see some before and after pictures.

Ask where the doctor will be doing the surgery. Some plastic surgeons operate in their own office suites; others prefer to work in the operating theater at a hospital. Since even the best planned face lift procedures can go wrong, it s a good idea to select a doctor who has a hospital affiliation in case you need to be admitted in an emergency.

Finally, how do you get along with the doctor? Do you feel a rapport? Avoid doctors who try to push you into more surgery than you feel comfortable with, or doctors who act as if your questions are a nuisance.

Take the time to ask questions until you re comfortable, and when the day of your face lift arrives, you should be able to go into surgery confident that you ve chosen the best doctor for you.

Getting a face lift is a huge decision and you want to make sure that you have all of the information you need to ensure that you are making the best decision for you. A face lift can change your life and make you feel better about yourself, but you have to be sure that what you are doing is something that you will be comfortable with because once its done its done! You will find that there is a lot of literature in bookstores and online that can help you learn more about the different face lift procedures. There are several different procedures that you can choose from and you should be well informed about all of them.

While there is a lot of face lift information available, your best resource is a licensed plastic surgeon. A licensed plastic surgeon can look at your perceived problem areas and advise you on the procedures that will best suit your needs. If you want the least invasive procedure such as a tightening around the eyes or the mouth, your plastic surgeon may suggest one procedure. On the other hand, if you want to revitalize the whole face, youd need a complete face lift. There are a lot of options and you should work with your doctor to determine which is right for you. If you dont seem to be compatible with your surgeon, you should find another, as it is very important that you are able to communicate openly.

FBI investigates AT&T security breach

Sunday, June 13, 2010

File:IPad-02.jpg

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched a probe into a security breach that allowed hackers to retrieve 114,000 e-mail addresses of iPad users on the AT&T network.

The FBI announced the investigation Friday, which will determine exactly what allowed a group of hackers using the name “Goatse Security” to access the data. The security breach was first announced by the blog Gawker on Wednesday. The FBI has since asked Gawker Media LLC, the owners of the site, to retain all information relating to the incident. The company was also involved in another recent case with Apple Inc., which included the iPhone 4. Gawker said that it does not believe it is the main target of this FBI investigation.

Editors at Gawker were able to verify the information the hackers sent to them, and did not post full e-mail addresses or any other identifying information in its initial story of the incident. Gawker said that it did not pay Goatse Security for the data. One of the hackers later wrote that they did not reveal the addresses to anyone else and had already deleted them.

The hackers were able to obtain the data after discovering a program on AT&T’s website that provides the e-mail address of a user when that user’s identification number is given. The hackers essentially guessed and then saved the numbers for the 114,000 users. They did not tell AT&T of the security hole.

A spokesperson for AT&T said Wednesday that the company “was informed by a business customer on Monday of the potential exposure of their iPad ICC-IDs [the identification numbers]”, and had disabled the e-mail-providing program by Tuesday. AT&T also said that no other information was stolen other than the e-mails addresses of their customers, and that “there is no evidence that any other customer information was shared.” The company says it will notify all of the iPad users whose information was compromised.

Many of the users involved are high-ranking government or corporate officials, including Rahm Emanuel, the current White House Chief of Staff, and Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York City. Others include employees of Google and the U.S. military.

Apple has not commented about the breach.

Highway bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota, collapses

Thursday, August 2, 2007

The Interstate 35W Mississippi River eight-lane bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota has collapsed on both sides of the highway over the Mississippi River during rush hour.

Previous reports indicated at least nine people had died, but Minneapolis police revised this to four during a 7:30 a.m. (local time) press conference. Tim Dolan, the Minneapolis Police Chief later stated that “several [adding to the four] people are confirmed dead at the scene,” but would not elaborate on how many. At least 79 have been injured and at least 8 are still missing, still believed to be in the rubble.

The road was busy with bumper-to-bumper traffic in four lanes when the entire 1907 foot (581 m) steel arch bridge collapsed. At least 50 cars were traveling on the bridge, including a school bus. The Red Cross said that 60 children were aboard a school bus, and that ten of those were admitted to a hospital.

The entire length of the bridge over the river collapsed at 6:05 p.m. CDT (UTC-5). The bridge, built in 1967, cleared the water level by 64 feet; the deck surface and pavement were considerably higher.

Reports say that people may be trapped in the water. Further, “many voids may contain survivors, but we cannot search those voids until it’s safe,” said Jim Clack, Minneapolis Fire Chief, during a press conference.

“One has died from drowning,” said a doctor from the medical center during an 8:00 pm press conference, who also said that so far 22 are in “yellow condition” and at least six are in “critical condition.”

Minneapolis officials have stated during an earlier press conference that “people are being sent downtown and all survivors are off the bridge. We are seeking help from the Red Cross.” and “[…]at least 60 children are receiving trauma care some with severe injures, some with minor injuries.”

Most of the injured have been received by Hennepin County Medical Center in downtown Minneapolis for medical treatment. Area hospitals are requesting all off duty staff and all Minneapolis ambulances to report. Residents are being encouraged to stay away from the area to let emergency crews do their work.

It is not known what caused the collapse, but there was construction being performed on the bridge’s road surface which included the use of jackhammers and the FBI has ruled out terrorism.

“Although it is much too early to make any determination of the cause, we have no reason at this time to believe there is any nexus to terrorism,” said Paul McCabe, an FBI spokesman.

In 2001 a stress inspection was done and Minnesota Department of Transportation stated that the bridge “should not have any problems with fatigue cracking in the foreseeable future.”

Typically an eight-lane bridge, the bridge was reduced to four lanes (two in each direction) during the current construction. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) had just announced overnight lane reductions on the bridge to one lane in each direction for the late evening hours of July 31 and August 1.

Salsa Dancing For Fitness Is Hot

Submitted by: David Demetre

Salsa dancing is emerging as a refreshing replacement for conventional aerobic exercises. Classes based on the fiery music and movements of Salsa, Mambo, Cumbia, Merengue and more are starting to get people interested in Salsa dancing, while at the same time giving them a pounding workout.

Salsa music first appeared in the 1960s as a rhythmic fusion, birthed in the cultural melting pot of New York City. Combining Cuban Son with Guaracha, Montuno and Guaguanco, it also has a strong Puerto Rican Plena, Bomba and American jazz influence that mellows the smoking urban sound.

Salsa s popularity began to percolate beyond the borders of the Latin neighborhoods in the early Seventies, spreading into New York’s ballrooms and dance halls. Although somewhat formulized when practiced by those who favor profession competitions, salsa dancing in its most traditional form is typically spontaneous and extremely energetic. Dance movements alternate between the very slow and the furious, an embodiment of its lively musical style.

From a strictly athletic point of view, a night of dancing is a superb workout. It merges aerobic and anaerobic training, working your stamina and leg strength. Any kind of dancing is a great way to build the perfect body shape. The continual movements build up aerobic stamina while steadily burning calories over the course of the evening. This helps to strengthen and tone your legs at the same time you lose weight. But salsa excels at this.

Experts say that dancing salsa can burn up to 10 calories a minute, without the negative side effects of high impact exercises such as running. You can learn salsa dancing in the privacy of your home or in a studio, with or without a partner and it s a fitness program that can easily be integrated into your social life. By using salsa dancing to get fit, you will not only look great, but you ll have no excuse not to get out more and improve your social life.

The sudden bursts of frenzied dancing in Salsa also can help to improve the anaerobic fitness essential to sports like sprinting, swimming and basketball. Equally important to the aerobic paybacks are the improvements in flexibility and dexterity, a commonly overlooked facet of fitness. Elasticity from dancing will help your swiftness, power and co-ordination by growing your overall range of motion.

When you think about it, dance is actually the most natural form of exercise around. It is also a lot more fun. Life is too short to waste on regimented aerobics, spinning and step classes. Put some spice in your fitness regimen and become a Salsero!

U.S. President Trump defends decision to share classified information with Russians

Wednesday, May 17, 2017

Yesterday morning, United States President Donald Trump defended his disclosure of classified information regarding the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) to Russian foreign minister Sergey V. Lavrov and ambassador Sergey I. Kislyak, a decision that has drawn a storm of both explanation and criticism from the media and both major U.S. political parties over the past week.

As president, I wanted to share with Russia (at an openly scheduled [White House] meeting) which I have the absolute right to do

Trump spoke directly to the public, as is his custom, via Twitter: “As president, I wanted to share with Russia (at an openly scheduled [?White House?] meeting) which I have the absolute right to do, facts pertaining to terrorism and airline flight safety. Humanitarian reasons, plus I want Russia to greatly step up their fight against Isis and terrorism.”

On May 10, President Trump met with Lavrov and Kislyak in the Oval Office and, according to reports first from the Washington Post, told them about an Islamic State plot to sneak explosives onto airplanes by hiding them in laptop computers, which may have placed the anonymous partner who provided it in danger of identification. According to U.S. officials, the information in question was so sensitive that it is not only usually not shared with allies but also extremely restricted even within the U.S. government.

“The Russians have the widest intelligence collection mechanism in the world outside of our own,” said John Sipher, the former head of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency’s Russia division. “They can put together a good picture with just a few details[…] They can marry President Trump’s comments with their own intelligence, and intelligence from their allies. They can also deploy additional resources to find out details.”

While it is not illegal for the sitting U.S. president to share classified information with foreign officials, it may violate the agreement with the person or organization who provided the information in the first place. There are concerns the Russians may reverse-engineer the process by which the information was gathered and identify the source. Because many of the countries in the Middle East have tribal-level connections to areas controlled by the Islamic State, allowing a source to be identified could place them in political as well as personal danger. An official from one country in Europe told the Associated Press his government might cease to share intelligence with the United States. According to U.S. officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, the information came from Israel. None of their Israeli counterparts have seen fit to either confirm or deny this, and Israeli ambassador to the U.S. Ron Dermer wrote to The New York Times expressing “full confidence” in the U.S. intelligence process.

Trump’s advisors who were present at the meeting were quick to say on Monday, once the disclosure was reported publicly, that Trump did not tell the Russians exactly how the U.S. had come by any information. “At no time — at no time — were intelligence sources or methods discussed, and the president did not disclose any military operations that were not already publicly known,” said Trump’s National Security Advisor, Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster, who also told reporters, “I was in the room. It didn’t happen.” No U.S. newspapers were invited to the meeting.

Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian foreign ministry, said the report of Trump disclosing classified material was “another fake.”

Republican Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee, noting he was not present at the meeting and did not personally know if President Trump actually compromised the source, said, “To compromise a source is something that you just don’t do, and that’s why we keep the information that we get from intelligence sources so close as to prevent that from happening.”

Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island, who serves on the U.S. Armed Services Committee, and fellow Democrat Adam Schiff of the House Intelligence Committee both raised concerns about Trump’s mindfulness. Reed called it “reckless” and said: “The president of the United States has the power to share classified information with whomever they wish, but the American people expect the president to use that power wisely. I don’t believe the president intentionally meant to reveal highly secretive information to the Russians.”

Republican John McCain of Arizona called this “A troubling signal to America’s allies and partners around the world and may impair their willingness to share intelligence with us in the future.”

Trump’s meeting with the Russian ministers took place one day after he fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, who had been running an investigation into alleged Russian involvement in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, which raised concerns about obstruction of justice.

CanadaVOTES: NDP candidate Jo-Anne Boulding in Parry Sound—Muskoka

Friday, October 10, 2008

In Wikinews’ attempt to speak with as many candidates as possible during the 2008 Canadian federal election, Wikinews has talked via email with Jo-Anne Boulding. Jo-Anne is a candidate in Ontario’s Parry Sound—Muskoka riding, running under the New Democratic Party (NDP) banner.

The riding’s Conservative incumbent is Tony Clement, Minister of Health and Minister for FedNor. Other candidates in the riding are Liberal Jamie McGarvey, Green Glen Hodgson, and independent David Rowland.

The following is an interview with Ms. Boulding, conducted via email, over a week ago.

She did not respond to two of the main questions: “Previous to this campaign, have you been politically involved? How will you apply your previous work/volunteer/life experience to serving your constituents?” and “What would you say are the three hottest topics this election, in your riding? What would you and your party do to address these issues?” Being unanswered, these questions were edited out of the interview, which otherwise is published as received.

Shoes Services And Leather Repair In Chicago Il

byAlma Abell

Do you have a favorite pair of shoes? Perhaps they are starting to look worn, but you cannot manage to part ways with them. A common part of shoes that becomes worn over time is the sole, and in the case of high heels, the heels can actually break off. Some people assume that when this occurs, there is no more hope for their favorite pair of shoes. They make the mistake of throwing them away when, in fact, the shoes could actually be repaired. Shoes can also lose their elasticity, which can affect the way they feel on your feet. The appearance can also be compromised with this type of wear and tear.

Leather shoes are some of the easiest to salvage. They get scratches and nicks on them, but professional Leather Repair in Chicago IL can revive your leather shoes. Some people think that shoe repairs are something that was done many years ago by their frugal parents and grandparents, and assume that it is an outdated measure. When you consider the cost of replacing a nice pair of leather shoes versus having them repaired, it makes common sense to think like people did many years ago. You will get the benefits of saving money as well as getting to keep your favorite pair of shoes.

Shoe repair shops offer more than Leather Repair in Chicago IL and fixing other cosmetic issues with shoes. For example, you may have a pair of shoes that you would like to get dyed. These specialty shops can also be used to help you get the shoes the color you want them. Common occasions that call for shoe dying are formal occasions. Attempting to dye your own shoes can be a messy experience, and the over-the-counter products designed to dye do not always produce the desired hue. This is why it makes sense to rely on professionals for your shoe dying needs.

When it is time to decide whether or not to repair shoes, keep in mind whether it makes sense from an economical viewpoint. For example, cheap shoes may be better suited for replacing. Leather and name brand shoes are ideal for repairs. Visit the Website of this shoe repair company for more guidance on shoe repair benefits.
