How Much Does A Catalytic Converter Cost?

By Hannah Munson

A catalytic converter (colloquially, “cat” or “cat con”) is a device found in a car’s interior used to convert toxic exhaust emissions from a combustion engine into non-toxic substances. What’s inside a catalytic converter is a catalyst that incites a chemical reaction which poisonous byproducts of combustion undergo. The type of chemical reaction varies depending upon the type of catalyst installed.

Catalytic converters have come so far since the mid-70s power-sapping pellet-style catalysts. Cat cons were initially introduced far and wide on series-production vehicles in the US market for model year 1975 to act in accordance with tapering U.S. Environmental Protection Agency set of laws on automobile exhaust emissions. Even now, catalytic converters remain universally utilized not only on motor vehicle exhaust systems, but as well as on generators, mining equipment, trucks, buses, airplanes and other engine fitted devices in response to government directive. A more up-to-date honeycomb catalytic converter allows a rather seamless flow all the way through your auto’s exhaust system during clear-out of nasty pollutants from your engine. Catalytic converters are not made to last, still, given how nasty the interiors of an automobile where they’re at, and an emissions test is achieve if you don’t have a smoothly-running catalytic converter.

All throughout United States, catalytic converters should be covered by a 2 years/24,000 miles emissions warranty mandated nationally. If your converter fails to prove its fit to operate properly due to a defect in supplies or function, causing your automobile not to meet federal emission standards, they should be fixed or interchanged under the emissions warranty if your vehicle is within the set duration or mileage. Even if you are already outside that scope, it is extremely rare for 6 year old converters to be bad.

The cost of catalytic converters can stretch from a couple of hundreds to sometimes even a couple of thousand dollars depending on the type that fits the specific model of the car you need the parts for. Though they had to need some cutting and welding, after-market converters are relatively more affordable and work fine too. Another factor is depending on which engine you have it. A few hundred more may be needed for labor. There are some shops however who does not charge for labor if you buy the parts from them. Just know that cat converters seldom wear down by themselves. Just about every occurrence is caused by an engine trouble which plunks unwanted gas into the converters. So up until you know for sure what caused cat cons to tire out, don’t bring them in for replacements.

In the end, it’s going to come down to the make and model of the car, etc that you need the piece for. When you do find out what part you’re going to need, you’re going to want to make sure that you compare with at least 2 to 3 companies either online, or in store. This way, you’re not only going to get the most bang for your buck, but one that is of quality.

Tunisian Prime Minister signs decree to ban face veils in public institutions, government offices

Monday, July 8, 2019

On Friday, Youssef Chahed, the Prime Minister of Tunisia, signed a government decree banning anyone wearing a niqab from entering a public institution or government offices. A niqab is a face-veil, which covers almost the entire face, and is commonly worn by Muslim females as a religious garment.

“Chahed signed a government decree that bars any person with an undisclosed face from access to public headquarters, administrations, institutions, for security reasons”, a government official said. This decision comes after a couple of suicide bombings took place in the country’s capital, Tunis, last month. Reportedly, two people were killed and at least eight people were injured in a suicide bombing that happened on June 27. According to eyewitness reports, the suicide bomber wore a face veil covering, the niqab. In the span of one week, at least three suicide bombings took place in Tunisia. The militant organisation, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, claimed responsibility for all three attacks.

Speaking to Agence France-Presse, the president of the Tunisian League for the Defence of Human Rights, Jamel Msallem, said, “We are for the freedom to dress, but today with the current situation and the terrorist threats in Tunisia and across the region we find justifications for this decision”. A member of the Tunisian Parliament, Samir Dilou said, “Tunisia is facing terrorist attacks, so every measure which is led by security motives is understandable”.

After an attack in the capital city in 2015, a bill was proposed in 2016 for banning the niqab, but was not passed. Souhail Alouini, a member of Parliament, said, “We proposed a bill in 2016 about this subject and it has still not been debated […] Maybe it is time now.”

Tunisia’s neighbouring Muslim-majority African countries including Algeria and Morocco have cited security concerns to impose bans on niqabs. Previously, another Islamic religious garment, the hijab, was banned in Tunisian public offices during Zine El Abidine Ben Ali’s Presidency. That ban was lifted in 2011.

Neanderthals ‘knew what they were doing’: Archæologist Dr Naomi Martisius discusses her findings about Neanderthals’ behaviour with Wikinews

Sunday, June 28, 2020

Last month, a study conducted by archæologist Dr. Naomi Martisius and other researchers concluded Neanderthals living in Europe tens of thousands of years ago were more sophisticated than previously thought. The now-extinct species used to carefully select bones from a particular animal species to manufacture their bone tools, the research showed. The research was published on May 8 in Nature’s Scientific Reports journal.

Dr Martisius and her team used five bone tools discovered from Neanderthals’ sites in southwest France for this research. Four of these bone tools were found in a site called Abri Peyrony and the other one was from Pech-de-l’Azé I. These tools were just a few centimetres in size and were about 50 thousand years old, Dr Martisius told Wikinews. Microscopy analysis of these bone tools called lissoirs (smoothers) suggested Neanderthals used these tools for working animal skin to leathers.

The study stated the fauna of the sites were primarily medium-sized ungulates such as reindeer, in one layer nearly 90%. Despite the overabundance of medium-sized ungulates, Neanderthals used ribs of large bovids for making lissoirs. Dr Martisius told Wikinews this was likely due to the physical characteristics of the bovid ribs, which were “thicker” and “stronger” as compared to the “thin and flimsy ribs” of reindeers. In order to check the origins of the bone tools, the researchers used a technology called non-destructive Zooarchæology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS).

Instead of damaging the bone artefacts in order to discover its origins, the researchers collected collagen from the plastic containers in which these artefacts were kept. Collagen is a type of protein. These bone artefacts were kept in plastic containers: some were kept for about five years, some for just a few months. During this time, the collagen proteins from bone tools were stuck to the walls of its plastic containers. The collagen samples collected from the walls of the containers are broken into smaller molecules called peptides by using a chemical enzyme called trypsin.

After the trypsin has broken collagen fibres into peptides, it is analysed using a technology called Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer (ToF MS). The assisting matrix is a coloured compound. The acidic peptide is combined with the matrix, vapourised, and peptides are released. Some of them are positively-charged particles which travel across a vacuum tube in an electric field. Depending on the weight of the peptides, these molecules reach the end of the vacuum tube at different instances of time, forming a spectrum. These graphs are like unique fingerprints of a species: they are different for different species of animals. Looking at the database of such graphs, taxonomic identifications of the collagen proteins came be made.

All four bone tools from Abri Peyrony gave positive results and showed that the bones were made from large bovids, even though reindeer were more abundant during that time. One of the advantages of using bovid ribs over reindeer’s thin ribs was the bovid ribs would be more resistant to breaking during flexion, Dr Martisius said.

Dr Martisius said such non-destructive ZooMS analysis was previously conducted, but for tools no older than a few centuries. She said such an analysis had never been previously conducted for artefacts so ancient.

Wikinews caught up with Dr Martisius to discuss this research in-depth.

Beginners Tips For Building Wooden Ship Models

Wooden boat kits are very simple and easy to construct. They are trouble-free to put together but also a pleasurable past time. However, it is important to pick the right kind of model kit. You have to decide what kind of model ship or model boat you desire to construct, before buying any wooden ship kit.

There are different kinds of model ships and boats are available in the market. The greatest advantage with these kits are that they are easily available. Once you have purchased the kit, find out how many things you got inside the kit. Make sure that all the pieces inside in the kit and the pieces mentioned on the list all match up. If any of the pieces goes missing, it could take away all the fun of building a ship model.

While checking all the pieces of the ship kit model, you get an idea of the whole model boat kit. Read the given instructions carefully before you start building the model. Keep all the parts of model beside you before beginning. Systematically follow each instruction. Be organized and do not try to be hasty or jump steps.

It is convenient to keep all the parts of the kit neatly on a table so that you don’t get confused with what you are working. In these wood ship kits, most of the parts given are already cut and shaped precisely. All you have to do is to fix them properly according to the instructions. It will save a lot of time as you don’t have to figure out where and which piece has to be placed. Therefore, it is a quite a simple process.

You can make it more enjoyable and simple by organizing your work schedule and method of working. Make sure that all the parts of the ship models are in good condition. There should be no damaged or warped parts which can create difficulty in joining. You could begin to build the frame and keel and then carry on from there. It would be very helpful if you manage your work properly as this would help in working accurately and faster.

Handcrafting the wooden ship kits can be highly rewarding experience as the final result is very attractive to look at. Take care of all the complicated details. Sand paper the joints so that there are no uneven and rough surfaces. When you have applied glue on the model, wait until the glue has dried before you proceed to the next step. Be practical and patient as there is no point in hastening through the process.

Highway bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota, collapses

Thursday, August 2, 2007

The Interstate 35W Mississippi River eight-lane bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota has collapsed on both sides of the highway over the Mississippi River during rush hour.

Previous reports indicated at least nine people had died, but Minneapolis police revised this to four during a 7:30 a.m. (local time) press conference. Tim Dolan, the Minneapolis Police Chief later stated that “several [adding to the four] people are confirmed dead at the scene,” but would not elaborate on how many. At least 79 have been injured and at least 8 are still missing, still believed to be in the rubble.

The road was busy with bumper-to-bumper traffic in four lanes when the entire 1907 foot (581 m) steel arch bridge collapsed. At least 50 cars were traveling on the bridge, including a school bus. The Red Cross said that 60 children were aboard a school bus, and that ten of those were admitted to a hospital.

The entire length of the bridge over the river collapsed at 6:05 p.m. CDT (UTC-5). The bridge, built in 1967, cleared the water level by 64 feet; the deck surface and pavement were considerably higher.

Reports say that people may be trapped in the water. Further, “many voids may contain survivors, but we cannot search those voids until it’s safe,” said Jim Clack, Minneapolis Fire Chief, during a press conference.

“One has died from drowning,” said a doctor from the medical center during an 8:00 pm press conference, who also said that so far 22 are in “yellow condition” and at least six are in “critical condition.”

Minneapolis officials have stated during an earlier press conference that “people are being sent downtown and all survivors are off the bridge. We are seeking help from the Red Cross.” and “[…]at least 60 children are receiving trauma care some with severe injures, some with minor injuries.”

Most of the injured have been received by Hennepin County Medical Center in downtown Minneapolis for medical treatment. Area hospitals are requesting all off duty staff and all Minneapolis ambulances to report. Residents are being encouraged to stay away from the area to let emergency crews do their work.

It is not known what caused the collapse, but there was construction being performed on the bridge’s road surface which included the use of jackhammers and the FBI has ruled out terrorism.

“Although it is much too early to make any determination of the cause, we have no reason at this time to believe there is any nexus to terrorism,” said Paul McCabe, an FBI spokesman.

In 2001 a stress inspection was done and Minnesota Department of Transportation stated that the bridge “should not have any problems with fatigue cracking in the foreseeable future.”

Typically an eight-lane bridge, the bridge was reduced to four lanes (two in each direction) during the current construction. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) had just announced overnight lane reductions on the bridge to one lane in each direction for the late evening hours of July 31 and August 1.

Glasgow cannabis enthusiasts celebrate ‘green’ on city green

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Coinciding with Easter Sunday, Glasgow Cannabis Social Club’s annual 420 event was held on Glasgow Green, under sunny blue skies, and overlooking the river Clyde. Despite the city’s council attempting to revoke permission for the gathering at the last minute, police were happy for it to go-ahead with approximately a dozen officers attending in high-visibility vests.

The Daily Record reported five arrests were made for minor offences, likely smoking and possession of small quantities of cannabis. Taking a less-sensational — and more accurate — line of reporting, the Monday edition of Glasgow’s Evening News stated five were referred to the Procurator Fiscal who is responsible for deciding if charges should be brought.

Official figures provided by the police were that 150 attended. With people coming and going, Wikinews reporters estimated upwards of 200 attended, compared to nearly 700 who had signed up for the event on Facebook. Hemp goods were advertised and on sale at the event, and some attendees were seen drinking cannabis-themed energy drinks.

“I was searched and charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act (which is a lot of bollocks)” one attendee noted online, adding “not fair to happen on a brilliant day like it was, other than that I had a great day!” A second said they were openly smoking and ignored by police, who “were only really focusing on people who looked particularly young”.

Cannabis seeds were openly and legally sold at the event and a hydroponics supplier brought a motortrike towing an advertising trailer. Actually growing cannabis is, however, illegal in the UK.

With the event openly advocating the legalisation of cannabis, speakers put their arguments for this to a receptive crowd. Retired police officer James Duffy, of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, spoke of the failed United States alcohol prohibition policy; stressing such policies needlessly bring people into contact with criminal elements. Highlighting other countries where legalisation has been implemented, he pointed out such led to lower crime, and lower drug use overall.

One speaker, who produced a bottle of cannabis oil he had received through the post, asserted this cured his prostate cancer. Others highlighted the current use of Sativex by the National Health Service, with a cost in-excess of £150 for a single bottle of GW Pharmaceuticals patented spray — as-compared to the oil shown to the crowd, with a manufacturing cost of approximately £10.

Similar ‘420’ pro-cannabis events were held globally.

Ricky Hatton regains IBF light welterweight title

Sunday, January 21, 2007

Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton regained the IBF light welterweight title belt he relinquished less than 12 months ago when he defeated Juan Urango in Las Vegas, Nevada tonight.

“The Hitman” won by unanimous decision, as the fight went to 12 rounds. Despite early match odds suggesting Hatton would dominate the fight, this was not the case. Each round was close, but most pundits and judges alike agreed that Urango only won 1 of the 12 rounds, with Hatton taking the other 11.

Despite the unfamiliar confines of Las Vegas, Hatton looked touched by the ringing of football fan-like chants, familiar in British boxing, that rang around the arena, as more than half of it was filled by traveling support from across the atlantic.

Many in the UK will hope Hatton has ended the “curse” that has seen names such as Frank Bruno, Naseem Hamed, Barry McGuigan and others fall short while headlining fights on “The Strip”.

From here, it is widely believed “The Hitman” will move on to fight Jose Luis Castillo in June, again likely in Vegas.

Can The Amino Acid L Arginine Help With Circulation And Blood Flow?

By Darrell Miller

L-arginine is one of the amino acids most widespread in nature, and involved in varied tasks of biological significance in heterotrophs such as human beings. The scientific community is convinced that the body produces the right amounts of L-arginine under normal circumstances, but also points out that individuals with unhealthy levels of L-arginine must get this chemical compound from their diets, infants included. The presence of L-arginine in the human body must amount to concentrations sufficient to support bodily functions such as healthy circulation and blood flow.

Poor nutrition is associated with low levels of L-arginine, which in turn has been associated with most cases of high blood pressure. Blood pressure is one of the most important measures of physiological functions adopted by modern day medicine, and more often than not pertinent to the assessment of human health and medical conditions. While there are no identifiable causes of high blood pressure, the use of L-arginine in treatment of cardiovascular diseases and hypertension has been common place.

Endothelium-Derived Relaxing Factor

What are the principles that led to the utilization of L-arginine against diseases of the circulatory system? Endothelial tissues are a thin lining of cells on the inner surface of blood vessels exposed to the inside space where blood flows and lying just next to the smooth muscle cells that do most of the pumping. These tissues are found everywhere in the circulatory system, including the heart and even the smallest of all blood vessels, and are responsible for stimulating the smooth muscle tissues beneath them to perform mechanisms that decrease the randomness of blood flow.

The endothelium releases a mixture of substances referred to as EDRF, the abbreviated form of endothelium-derived relaxing factor, resulting in the vasodilation of the smooth muscle tissues of the blood vessels. EDRF is in fact nitric oxide that plays the key role of a biological messenger not only in human beings, but in all animals with backbones and spinal columns. With or without a combination of compounds, nitric oxide induces the blood vessels to widen as the smooth muscle tissues relax, promoting an increase in the flow of blood and, of course, a decrease in blood pressure.

L-Arginine and Nitric Oxide

The efficacy of EDRF in connection with its mechanisms that relax the smooth muscle tissues has been attributed to nitric oxide, in itself active in other animals in the same manner, and the production of nitric oxide in the human body is governed by the availability of the bioactive compound L-arginine. EDRF is an endogenous substance that is synthesized inside the body, but L-arginine can be absorbed from an outside source.

Individuals who dont meet their nutritional needs have been reported to have low levels of L-arginine, and, if suffering from cardiovascular diseases or hypertension, their endothelial cells do not respond effectively to the chaos inside the blood vessels. L-arginine in supplements is a significant precursors of nitric oxide used as EDRF by the endothelium, promoting an overall circulatory health.

L-arginine is available in capsule, tablet, powder, and liquid forms. Look for quality L-arginine at your local or internet vitamin store.

UAE launches national authority for scientific research

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced its first national authority for scientific research (NASR) to coordinate and fund scientific research in the country.

The national authority for scientific research was announced on March 7 by Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE minister for higher education and scientific research. NASR will begin with an annual budget of AED100 million (approximately US$27.2 million). The authority hopes to receive additional contributions from the public and the private sector.

NASR will look to fund research projects in various fields, including engineering, technology, medicine, water and agriculture, proposing specific projects to be competed for by researchers at universities and private research institutes.

“Projects are going to be selected to help promote scientific research and the growth of UAE society and we will compare them with international scientific research criteria,” Gulf News quoted Al Nahyan as saying at the launch.

NASR will also train scientists and develop programmes for promoting public science awareness. It will also coordinate with government authorities on the issue of intellectual property rights, by providing advice on how companies and research centres should go about protecting their discoveries in the form of patents or licenses. It will also provide scholarships for researchers in the UAE to work on international research programmes, and organise national scientific conferences. NASR forms part of the UAE’s strategic plan to improve higher education and scientific research.

Zakaria Maamar, associate professor at the College of Information Technology at Zayed University, UAE, told Science and Development Network (SciDev.Net) that, “This initiative is another boost to the research and development activities that are carried out in the UAE. It will definitely provide researchers with the appropriate funds to sustain such activities and promote best practices in the community.”

Said Elnaffar, assistant professor at the college of information technology at the United Arab Emirates University, told SciDev.Net that, with this initiative, the UAE is taking the lead and setting a good example by building a strong development infrastructure founded on knowledge discovery and research.

Ukrainian manufacturer preparing to sell Adolf Hitler dolls

Thursday, April 24, 2008

Correction — May 3, 2008 This article has been retracted. This article has been deemed a hoax. Please see the follow up article, Hitler doll story found to be hoaxed, for more information.

News reports are claiming that dolls depicting former Nazi leader Adolf Hitler will go on sale in Ukraine. These reports cite Ukraine’s Zerkalo Nedeli newspaper which reported that a toy manufacturer would release the line of Hitler dolls in the summer.

The 40cm doll will reportedly first be available in Kiev with a £100 (GBP) price tag and comes with a large range of accessories in a presentation box with the dates of Hitler’s birth and death.

Nazis images are illegal in Ukraine, with positive portrayal specifically banned. However, there are allegations that right-wing nationalist politics are gaining strength in the country and that xenophobia and racism are on the rise, including some said to be comparable to that present in Germany under Nazi rule. Fascism and propaganda are also banned.

When the former Soviet Union, including Ukraine, was invaded by Germany under Hitler’s rule 2–3 million Ukrainians were among the casualties, of which 1.5 million were Jews.

Adolf can be dressed in various guises, including “early days Adolf”, which consists of a brown shirt and jodhpurs, and “Wartime Adolf”, which features a grey tunic, black trousers and the Iron Cross medal. The doll also comes with boots and shoes, caps, gloves, full uniforms, cane and belt which can be placed on Hitler, whose arms move, allowing the doll to replicate the famed salute of its real life counterpart.

Kids can undress fuhrer, pin on medals and there’s a spare head in the kit to give him a kinder expression on his face

Also included is a model of Blondi, Hitler’s female German Shepherd, who was exceedingly loyal to Hitler. Hitler poisoned Blondi with cyanide in 1945 at the same time as taking his own life in his bunker at Berlin.

“It is like Barbie. Kids can undress fuhrer, pin on medals and there’s a spare head in the kit to give him a kinder expression on his face. He has glasses that are round, in the manner of pacifist John Lennon,” said one saleswoman. The company, which will release the dolls in Summer, says that if demand is high a range of toys themed on the Third Reich may be released, to include barracks, working models of crematoriums and gas chambers, concentration camps and interior models of the chancellery.

The doll is not set to be released until the summer, but BBC News Online has footage suggesting that some stores are selling the doll already.
