Canadian inspectors to test food ingredients from China

Saturday, April 28, 2007

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued border alerts for specific protein ingredients, imported from China, that may be incorporated into products destined for human consumption.

Inspectors from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) will hold products, such as wheat and corn gluten, as well as soy and rice proteins until they can be tested for melamine, the contaminant found to have sickened pets through its use in pet food. If determined to be free of melamine, the ingredients will be released to the intended recipient. Materials such as glutens and protein powders are used commonly in many forms of food products.

The CFIA said it was not acting on specific information, but rather taking a cautious approach to human protection. “That’s why we have the border lookout for the ingredient, so that we can proactively assess any potential that the product is contaminated,” Paul Mayers of the CFIA told CBC News.

Since the border alert for melamine is a new procedure, the government can’t be sure if the contaminant made it into the food chain previously. The CFIA acknowledged that the same Chinese company under suspicion in the tainted pet food affair had shipped wheat gluten to a Canadian company, which in turn used it in food for fish farms. Although the fish were subsequently eaten by people, the CFIA believes the health risk from such consumption would be low.

In related news, Canadian researchers at the University of Guelph believe they may have determined the mechanism of how melamine caused illness in cats and dogs.

Both cyanuric acid and melamine were found in urine samples from pets that died after consuming contaminated pet food. The two compounds react with one another to form crystals that may block kidney function, researchers at the university said. The researchers observed crystals formed in cat urine by the addition of melamine and cyanuric acid. The composition of these crystals matches those found in the urine of affected pets when compared by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).

“You wouldn’t normally expect to find those compounds in pet food, and hence nobody was really looking for it,” said John Melichercik, director of analytical laboratory services. “It’s just another piece of the puzzle along the way in this particular pet-food issue.”

Online Slots Developer Review: Net Ent

The History of NetEnt

NetEnt started with a traditional land-based casino. According to the company’s official website, Bill Lindwall and Rolf Lundstrm founded AB Restaurang Rouletter (a land-based casino) in 1963, expanded by partnering with a former rival, AB Roulett Konsult & Spelautomater, in 1968, and gained national recognition by the 1970s. The son of one of the founders, Pontus Lindwall, founded NetEnt in 1996. Alongside Microgaming, NetEnt is considered the pioneer of the iGaming industry. Since 2011, NetEnt has entered the mobile games segment of the market. Most of NetEnt’s top titles are available in both a desktop and mobile format.

What’s So Special about NetEnt?

The best way to critique an iGaming company (or any other business) is by referring to the so-called ‘Unique Selling Points,’ this company’s characteristics that make it stand out against the rest. NetEnt has at least three: the selection of games, quality, and innovation. NetEnt has everything to offer, including video poker, scratch cards, live and mobile casino games, and, most importantly, slots. In each of these categories, the developer delivers content of the highest quality, which explains the popularity of NetEnts’ products in the iGaming market. Also, while many online casino software developers stick to desktop versions of the software, NetEnt’s experience with mobile games is over ten years long. Given the convenience of gambling on the phone and the popularity of mobile games among gamblers, it’s one of NetEnt’s top achievements.

NetEnt’s Best Products

Starburst

Although Starburst is almost 10 years old, it’s the company’s most popular game. Starburst is a simple slot with a nice-to-look-at interface, generous bonuses, and uncomplicated rules. It may not be as impressive as a newer graphic masterpiece, Asgardian Stones, but it never fails to attract gamblers who appreciate tasteful simplicity.

Divine Fortune

Divine Fortune is another slot in NetEnt’s top five list. It’s more graphically advanced and, unlike Starburst, has a plot. Divine Fortune is based on well-familiar stories from Ancient Greek mythology, which is perhaps why so many players are drawn to it.

Blood Suckers

Blood Suckers is a slot unlike any others. First created several years ago, when the entire world was obsessed with vampire stories, Blood Suckers has been re-released and managed to retain its popularity. One of the game’s main advantages is an eerie instrumental soundtrack that turns playing Blood Suckers into an almost immersive experience.

Narcos

Narcos is a slot created on the wave of the television show’s popularity. No one’s watching Netflix’s Narcos anymore, but NetEnt’s slot remains as popular as ever. Narcos are perfect for anyone who likes the atmosphere of the GTA but prefers slots. What’s more, the graphics in this one is amazing.

There’s no better way to introduce NetEnt than to recommend a couple of the company’s games and let you be the judge. Luckily, NetEnt’s product line is so vast that anyone will find something addictive. If you’re bad at making decisions, simply flip a coin to choose one from the four titles above. Otherwise, invest an evening or two into looking for something that matches your unique tastes and expectations.

Colonel Sanders statue lost in 1985 recovered from river in Japan

Saturday, March 14, 2009

A long-lost statue of the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) Harland ‘Colonel’ Sanders was finally pulled up from a river in Osaka Prefecture, western Japan. Though covered with mud, he was still smiling as he was 23 and a half years before. In October 1985, the statue was tossed into the river by some overjoyed fans of the Hanshin Tigers baseball team, which led to a ‘legend’ known as “the Curse of Colonel Sanders.”

On Tuesday afternoon, the upper body of the reinforced plastic statue was found unexpectedly. Osaka City had a plan to lay a paved path along D?tonbori River, and a contractor diver noticed a figure near the bottom while checking for unexploded World War II bombs. The workers pulled it up, and Tigers fans among them recognized the figure as the Colonel. The lower body was also found on Wednesday morning. The statue still lacks some parts like eyeglasses, feet and left hand, but the contractor reportedly says it’s almost impossible for the rest to be found, due to lack of visibility in the water.

Osaka City will return the statue, about 180 cm in height, to KFC Japan. Reportedly the company is considering displaying the statue at its franchise in the Tigers home Hanshin K?shien Stadium in Nishinomiya City, Hy?go Prefecture (neighboring Osaka Pref.).

The story of the Hanshin Tigers and the Colonel statue dates back to October 1985. Because the team got the Central League title for the first time in 21 years, ecstatic fans crowded around D?tonbori. Some were so overjoyed that they jumped into the river for the team players. Unfortunately no one among them looked like Randy Bass, the team’s star slugger. Near them was a KFC franchise (closed 1998), and they presumably found resemblance between Bass and ‘Colonel’ Sanders (both were bearded). They started to chant “Baassu, Baassu” and tossed the Colonel statue into the river in honor of their hero. The team also won the Japan Series later in that year.

However, this was the Hanshin Tigers’ last triumph. The team soon fell into a long-term slump, and finished at the bottom among 6 Central League teams in 10 of 16 seasons by 2001. During the slump, some baseball lovers in Japan jokingly said “it was brought by the Curse of Colonel Sanders,” which became a legend. The Tigers again got the League title in 2003 and 2005, but the fans’ dream of another triumph has not yet come true.

Asked whether the ‘curse’ will be lifted by the discovery, Hanshin Tigers manager Akinobu Mayumi said “now we can not lay (our luck) to it.” A KFC Japan press officer said, “Truly, Sanders is a ‘gentleman’. The ‘curse’ must end, and he must back Hanshin up to be a Japan Series Champion.”

Scottish prosecutors keeping quiet about Lanarkshire surgical deaths

Wednesday, February 22, 2012

Crown Office are staying quiet about possible prosecutions after an inquiry found medical failures caused three deaths at NHS Lanarkshire.

In response to a specific question as to the possibility of prosecutions, a Crown Office spokesperson told Wikinews today that “The three deaths were fully investigated by the Procurator Fiscal and reported to Crown Counsel [laywers] to consider. Crown Counsel concluded that, given the facts and circumstances of the deaths, a Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) was the appropriate forum to consider the circumstances of the deaths.” It was further noted that “[a] FAI cannot make any findings of fault/blame against individuals.”

However, Crown Office did not specifically rule out prosecutions for offences such as cuplable homicide despite the spokesperson noting this was a direct response to such a question. They also declined to comment on National Health Service care as “it would not be appropriate to comment on the provision of NHS services” and entirely ignored questions about Crown Office satisfaction in the inquiry’s outcome and the length of time it took to reach a conclusion. The inquiry wrapped up last week but the deaths were in 2006.

Agnes Nicol, George Johnstone, and Andrew Ritchie died within a three-month period following keyhole surgery to remove their gall bladders.

Later expanded to look at all three deaths, the inquiry initially established to look into the case of Nicol, 50, who received surgery in late 2005. A surgeon at Wishaw General Hospital mistakenly cut her bile duct and her right hepatic artery. Whilst suturing her portal vein, her liver was left with 20% of its normal blood supply; the errors were not discovered until her transfer to liver specialists at Edinburgh’s Royal Infirmary.

By then, her liver was seriously damaged. She developed septicaemia, dying from multiple organ failure in March 2006.

Johnstone, 54, underwent the same procedure at Monklands District General Hospital on May 9, 2006. A consultant surgeon accidentally damaged, possibly severing, his bile duct. He died two days later in intensive care from the combined effects of multiple organ failure and a heart ailment.

Ritchie, 62, died in intensive care a week after an operation in June 2006. He died from intra abdominal haemorrhage caused by errors during the surgery.

Different surgeons were involved each time and the inquiry, under Sheriff Robert Dickson, found no evidence of poor training or inadequate experience. Dickson noted that in each case there was lack of action on a “growing body of evidence that there was something fundamentally wrong with the patient” and surgeons failed to contemplate their own actions as potentially responsible. He agreed with two professors that it may have been possible to save their lives “had the post-operative care been to the standard which they expected, and had there been a proper management plan which staff could have worked to” and noted that all the patients suffered from a lack of adequate medical notes being available after their surgery. He described the care as having “clear faults”.

NHS Lanarkshire apologised and said improvements had been made regarding “these types of cases” as well as with document management. Wikinews got in touch seeking details of the changes made but the health trust failed to respond.

Cabbage Soup Diet: Getting To Know The Cabbage

By Darren T

The cabbage is a famous cruciferous vegetable, just like Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and Cauliflower, that is just commonly used for cooking. It is also popular for its discovered medicinal and therapeutic properties. It is even famous for its perceived ‘fat-burning’ effects, thus the existence of the so-called Cabbage Soup Diet. But most especially, the vegetable was pretty well known because like any other cruciferous vegetables, it is believed to contain certain chemicals that can help prevent the deadly cancer.

The History of Cabbage

The cabbage, from the Brassica oleracea Capitata Group, is a plant that is a member of the Family Brassicaceae or Cruciferae. It was taken from a leafy wild mustard herb that is native to the Mediterranean region. The cabbage was recognized by the ancient Romans and Greeks. They praised this vegetable for its medicinal and healing properties.

The English name of the vegetable was derived from the Normanno-Picard ‘caboche’, which means ‘head’. Because of its ready availability, its being high in nutrients and because it is inexpensive, the cabbage is among those that top the list of healthy and nutritious foods.

The use of the cabbage was believed to have started during the Greek era. Back then, the Greeks used newly picked white cabbages and made juice out of them. The juice was used to relieve painful or infected eyes. The cabbage juice was also drunk by Romans and Egyptians because it was also believed that the juice can prevent intoxication.

The Health Benefits of Cabbage

We can have a lot of health benefits from the cabbage. Cabbage is anti-inflammatory vegetable, which either reduces, if not prevents, swelling and tenderness. It has lactic acid that helps in disinfecting the colon. Cabbage can also be utilized to lessen headaches. One more benefit that we can get from the cabbage is its anti-cancer properties. Cabbage is also believed to be effective in treating other skin conditions. Also, the cabbage juice when drunk from the stem can be a very good remedy for treating ulcers.

If you are suffering from gastritis, the fresh cabbage juice is very good for you. Drinking an amount of 25-50 ml cabbage juice daily is also very useful in dealing with headache, bronchitis, asthma, and other problems in digestion. Mouth ulcers will be healed faster when white cabbage juice is dabbed on the mouth ulcers.

The Varieties of Cabbages

Cabbages have several varieties according to its shape and maturity. There are Green and Red Cabbages. There is also the more delicate Bok Choy, which is a Chinese variety of cabbage. The ‘Early Jersey Wakefield’ (cone-shaped), “Late Flat Dutch”, and “Danish Ballhead” (late, round-headed) are the traditional varieties.

Raw cabbages are commonly shredded or are sliced into thin strips. These are used in salads, like that in coleslaw. Its leaves are softened by placing the whole head of cabbage inside the freezer or parboiling and then filled with chopped rice and/or meat. Cabbage often supplements to stews or soups. The Cabbage Soup Diet is exceptionally popular in both Eastern and Central Europe.

India signs on to chemical patents to comply with WTO order

Wednesday, March 23, 2005

A bill passed by India’s Parliament put an end to the manufacture of many cheap generic drugs copied from products protected by foreign company patents. A Patents Amendment Bill (2005) has been condemned by foreign aid groups who expect a significant rise in drug costs as a result of the bill.

Drug compounds in India were previously not protected by patents, meaning that research and developement costs borne by the originating manufacturers were avoided by generic drug producers. The new bill “will move India toward the patent mainstream and support and encourage innovation and investment in research and development in India,” said Ranjit Sahani, managing director of Novartis India.

As the world’s fourth-largest manufacturer of drugs by volume, the pharmaceutical industry in India is valued at US$5 billion – but ranks as only 13th by value, reflecting the low costs to consumers of the products. “Because India is one of the world’s biggest producers of generic drugs, this law will have a severe knock-on effect on many developing countries which depend on imported generic drugs from India,” said Samar Verma, regional policy adviser at Oxfam International.

Around half of African, Asian and Latin American HIV patients needing anti-retroviral drugs rely on low-cost drugs from India, which are sold at one twentieth the price of similar drugs produced in the West.

More than 90 per cent of drugs listed as essentials in India are either unpatented or expired. Drugs patented before 1995 — when the World Trade Organization [WTO] set a 10 year deadline to enact protection — will not be eligible under the bill.

Some degree of protection was mandated by WTO in order for India to have greater access to international markets. Opposers of the bill say it goes too far.

The Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights [TRIPS], under WTO, allows developing countries to not provide patent protection for uses of known drugs, new dosages and formulations, or combinations of known drugs.

14,000-acre Southern California ‘Crown Fire’ at 82% containment, evacuation orders lifted

Sunday, August 1, 2010

Antelope Valley, California —The Crown Fire that has burned through 13,980 acres in the High Desert of Southern California since 2:32 pm (2232 UTC) Thursday was at 82% containment Saturday evening, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

On Friday high winds caused the fire to jump the California Aqueduct and spread into the city of Palmdale. Over 2,000 residents of Leona Valley, Ana Verde, and Rancho Vista were given mandatory evacuation orders. The sky was blanketed with thick orange pyrocumulus clouds and falling ash, making the air hard to breathe.

State Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger arrived in Palmdale on Friday to survey the burned areas. “We were very fortunate to not have fires for quite some time because the air temperature was cool and we didn’t have the experiencing of dry weather and all the winds and so on, but all of a sudden the fire season kicked in as if, ‘Here we are,'” Schwarzenegger said during a press conference. “But we are ready and we have luckily distributed resources all over the state of California, so we are ready at any given time.”

The fire has so far destroyed one house and three mobile homes, damaging the roof of another and burning car garages, horse stables, and other outbuildings. Most of the more seriously threatened homes were constructed recently from fire-proof materials, with walls coated in stucco, and fire-resistant plants in the yards. Although some roads are still closed to all traffic, all existing evacuation orders were lifted late Friday night and 500 residents of Rancho Vista were told to “shelter in place” until further notice. Despite the absence of mandatory evacuation orders, over 2,000 houses, 60 commercial buildings, and 100 outbuildings are still under threat.

Throughout the night, fire crews have been battling the wildfire, assisted by cooler temperatures and lighter-than-expected winds which have enabled them to establish containment lines. “Crews went out [Friday] night and did some great work trying to complete more lines and also trying to take care of what we call ‘cat eyes’ which are embers within the perimeter of the fire, so there will be much more work being done there today,” said LACFD Captain Roland Sprewell. “But of course we’re not going to rest on our laurels today…we’re going to be vigilantly watching the winds, especially in the ridge and down in the valleys.”

At the height of the fire, 1,700 firefighters from all over California were battling the flames, although as of 12:00 pm Saturday afternoon, it has been reduced to around 1,350 personnel. 16 fire camp crew have also assisted. 250 fire engines and four bulldozers have been used. In the air, 4 Boeing 747 supertankers, 1 McDonnell Douglas DC-10 tanker, and 6 modified Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters known as “Firehawks” have been dropping water and red Phos-Chek slurry. The Los Angeles Sheriffs Department also increased its presence in the Antelope Valley by bringing in response teams from stations outside the AV. This afternoon, the deployment has been scaled back to three teams as the fire stabilizes and further evacuation orders become unlikely.

Three firefighters have been injured battling the fire, although all injuries are minor. One sheriff deputy was also hospitalized for smoke inhalation but has since been released.

Creative Outdoor Advertising With A Sale Balloon And Tent Rental

By Andrew Hallinan

Year-round outdoor advertising in Florida (including Tallahassee, Miami, Tampa, Orlando, and other parts of central Florida) is relatively simple. With no snow or extreme temperatures to worry about, winter and holiday advertising options are just as limitless as during the rest of the year. This is especially helpful for the holiday shopping rush. The mild Florida winters mean that shoppers enjoy being outside more during the cooler months, enjoying a break from the summer heat that seems to long after summer break is done. And for the business owner or operator, this calm weather means less thwarted outdoor advertising opportunities. Here are some creative outdoor advertising ideas to draw attention to your business during the busiest shopping time of the year.

Sale Tent

Add to the holiday festivities by hosting an outdoor promotional celebration. For Halloween, consider setting up a pumpkin patch, bobbing for apples, or a holiday photo op with Santa. Whatever you plan on doing as an outdoor advertisement and attention-grabbing parking-lot promotional, it is important to have a tent rental set up. Even though the weather is mild, customers and employees will be much more comfortable having some protection from the elements. A party tent rental provides the fresh air, space, and road-side accessibility combined with a little bit of shelter. There is no better advertising campaign for attracting new customers than an over-flowing, festive, parking lot.

Or, you may want to consider a sale tent rental. Setting up a sale tent in front of your business will instantly add space to your store for more of your goods and merchandise to be displayed. Maximizing floor space during the holiday rush is essential. The more merchandise available to shoppers, the more likely they are to spend their money with your business. A sale tent will protect these good from the direct Florida sun, or should some bad weather come through, keep your good dry. Your merchandise will protected by the sale tent and your shoppers will also be much more comfortable as they will also be protected, but won’t be crammed and pushed around on an over-stocked sales floor.

Sale Balloon

For the business looking for the coverage and a creative outdoor advertising to promote holiday while still staying indoors, a sale balloon is the best way to go. A sale balloon and an inflatable rental balloon will be just as eye-popping as a sale tent for those driving by, however it serves more an a giant multi-dimensional billboard that can be as simple or elaborate as your business needs. The most popular option in using a sale balloon are holiday characters (such as a turkey, Santa Claus, an elf, reindeer, etc), or holiday icons (such as candy canes, Christmas trees, Menorah, etc).

Of course, for the ultimate in creative outdoor advertising, businesses can combine these two ideas, using both a sale tent and sale balloon to attract Florida shoppers in search of the perfect holiday gifts. What better way to attract potential customers than with a brightly colored, comfortable, and festive shopping arena.
