Chicago Transit Authority announces repairs to Blue and Red Line

Wednesday, July 11, 2007

Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) riders on the subway portions of the Red and Blue lines may see relief of the slow zone in the coming months. So-called “slow zones” are locations where trains travel at restricted speeds because of track work or deteriorating conditions.

The CTA is putting nearly US$15 millions towards renovation of the O’Hare to Clark/Lake portion of the Blue Line and Chicago to Belmont portions of the Red Line. Work will happen during off peak and overnight hours. The CTA says that one track operations and delays may occur.

“We have heard our customers’ frustration with slow zones and today we are acting to address their concerns,” said Chicago Transit Board chairperson Carole Brown. “I am pleased that we are able to leverage existing contracts to begin this work and I look forward to working with state lawmakers to increase transit investment to bring our entire system to a state of good repair.”

Take It From The Experts: What To Do Before And After Plastic Surgery

Take It from the Experts: What to Do Before and After Plastic Surgery

by

Terry Bayer

A lot of people today like to change their appearances to increase their popularity and their self-confidence. Some people would even go as far as having plastic surgery just so they would look good. Although there\’s nothing essentially wrong with having cosmetic surgery, the results aren\’t always exactly what one would hope for. In fact, some people experience complications after they had plastic surgery. The best way to avoid the risks and complications would be to follow the advice of a certified plastic surgeon. Therefore, here are some things that one should do before and after plastic surgery:

Before the procedure

Avoid smoking cigarettes – Patients should abstain from smoking cigarettes at least two weeks prior to surgery. Otherwise, their body will be exposed to a myriad of complications: delayed wound healing, infection, bruising, and tissue degeneration. This is because the nicotine and other chemicals will clog the blood vessel and prevent oxygenated blood from traveling to the tissues.

Avoid taking any medications – It is also wise to discontinue taking medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and herbal supplements. These would inhibit blood clotting and prevent wounds from healing after the surgery. Therefore, patients should tell their surgeons what medications they are currently taking to prevent any complications.

After the procedure

Take pain relievers – It is only normal to feel discomfort and pain for two days after plastic surgery. Medication can be taken to relieve any pain and soreness. However, only those prescribed by a reputable surgeon, like a

Beverly Hills plastic surgeon

, should be taken. Cold compresses like gel packs and frozen vegetables would also help reduce the swelling and soreness on the affected area.

Let the body rest- Proper rest and sleep are essential to help the body recuperate faster. Therefore, doing strenuous activities should be avoided until the body is fully healed. Although aerobic exercise should be avoided, short walks can be done to prevent blood clotting in any parts of the body. It would also be wise to consult a

plastic surgeon Beverly Hills

Eat healthy- Patients would experience difficulty in eating for the first 24 hours after the surgery. Therefore, they should eat food that can be easily digested such as soup, jelly, and ginger ale. A

plastic surgeon Beverly Hills

Eyewitnesses challenge Egyptian state media impartiality in fatal protests

Thursday, October 13, 2011

With at least 24 dead, eye-witnesses to Sunday night’s protests in Egypt assert state-run media broadcast unreliable information, and incorrectly claimed Coptic protesters provoked military action.

Challenging the official narrative provided by Egyptian state media channels, including Channel One and Nile News, blog reports and other social media coverage dispute early reports on Channel One that those protesting threw stones, and fired live ammunition, at military personnel. Further allegations assert coverage was selective, with footage of military vehicles pursuing and running over protesters not aired.

Nile News conducted interviews with injured on each side of the clash. Military and security barred protestors from reaching their building. Nile News anchor Hesham Assy said: ” We did the best we could, given the circumstances, as it was very difficult to leave the building last night.”

Despite this, journalist Mai Elwakil writing for Almasry Alyoum claims “the coverage [overall] seems to have led viewers to believe that Coptic protesters caused the violence.”

Challenging the stance of state media, it is claimed the military fired upon protesters, and deliberately attacked them using excessive force. Members of the state media also question the coverage; state TV worker Taghreed al-Dossouky announced via her Twitter account, “I reject the Egyptian state media’s coverage because it incites sectarianism, and I condemn all those who partake in it.”

At least 24 people were killed and over 200 wounded as the demonstration turned violent.

Chinese General threatens U.S. with nuclear weapons over possible Taiwan Strait conflict, Beijing downplays comment

Saturday, July 16, 2005

A General in the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and dean at the National Defense University in China commented to visiting Hong Kong reporters on Friday that the PLA might use nuclear weapons against the U.S., in a conflict over the Taiwan Strait. “If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition onto the target zone on China’s territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons,” Maj. Gen. Zhu Chenghu said to the reporters of the Asian Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times. “We Chinese will prepare ourselves for the destruction of all of the cities east of Xian [in central China]. Of course the Americans will have to be prepared that hundreds … of cities will be destroyed by the Chinese.”

U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack called the remarks “highly irresponsible” and “unfortunate”, and expressed the hope that they did not reflect the views of the Chinese government.

Echoing the official Xinhua News Agency, the People’s Republic of China’s Foreign Ministry officials said that Zhu was expressing personal views, and had warned the reporters accordingly, but stated that China would never tolerate “Taiwan independence”. Reportedly, Maj. Gen. Zhu is not directly involved in the formulation of Chinese military strategy.

The U.S. may defend Taiwan under the Taiwan Relations Act and is currently Taiwan’s largest arms supplier.

U.S. outlaws online gambling

Saturday, October 14, 2006

Over the weekend, millions of Americans faced the new ban of online gambling.

The legislation was attached by Rep. Bill Frist to the Port Security bill.

Many of the public companies that offer online gambling have been quick to react and give their outlooks on the legislature. Party Gaming and 888 among others have said that they will shut down all U.S. operations if President Bush signs the bill into law. This sent online gambling stocks tumbling with Party Gaming leading the way with a 55% decrease in market value.

The people involved are awaiting to see what happens over the next few weeks.

  • German president dissolves parliament; elections in September
  • German Constitutional Court green-lights early elections call
  • TV debate between German chancellor Schröder and opposition leader Merkel held
  • Death of candidate will delay final results for German federal election by weeks

  • Results
Aftermath
  • German Christian Democrats win by-election in Dresden
  • Schröder gives up German chancellorship ambitions, makes way for Merkel
  • German Social and Christian Democrats agree on new government
  • Angela Merkel elected new German chancellor
Background

The German federal Constitutional Court, the Bundesverfassungsgericht, has dismissed the complaints by two Members of the Bundestag against the dissolving of the parliament and removed the last obstacle on the road to early elections on September 18th.

Jelena Hoffmann from chancellor Gerhard Schröder‘s Socialdemocrats and Werner Schulz from the Greens, which are also members of the government, claimed that the loss of confidence by Schröder on July 1st was orchestrated and that President Horst Köhler had therefore no right to dissolve the Bundestag on July 21st.

The majority of the court, voting 7:1, disagreed with that assessment. It ruled, that Schröder’s declaration, saying he does not have a reliable majority in parliament for his reform programme, is “plausible” and added that the Constitution grants the chancellor wide freedom in that matter.

Representatives of all major parties have welcomed the decision.
